2019-2020 LOU Parent Academy

The Barksdale Reading Institute (BRI) is proud to partner with Bramlett Elementary School and Lafayette Lower Elementary School to offer The LOU Parent Academy to parents of three, four, and five-year-olds in our community.  The LOU Parent Academy is a free program designed to help parents prepare their three, four, and five-year-old children for a successful start in school. Any parents with three, four, and five-year-olds in the LOU Community may participate.

The program covers a series of kindergarten-readiness topics such as oral language, early reading, math, general development, etc. over the course of five meetings, referred to as “modules.” The modules are conducted once-a-month at the schools from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.  Parents will receive hands-on instruction and be given free materials and activities to take home and use with their children to support their learning and development.  Door prizes, meal, and limited childcare will also be provided! It does not matter at which school your child attends/will attend kindergarten, you can attend either monthly training location. Just pick the date that works with your schedule.

We are pleased and honored that the LOU Community was chosen to participate in the Parent Academy again this school year. Teachers and staff from Bramlett Elementary School and Lafayette Lower Elementary School have attended intensive trainings at the BRI Jackson Office to prepare to host The LOU Parent Academy.  The LOU Parent Academy will take place at the schools once a month in October, November, January, February, and March. Parents are encouraged to attend all five modules, with a graduation prize being offered to those who attend all modules!

The Barksdale Reading Institute was founded in 2000 by Jim and Sally Barksdale, who, after researching the state of education in America, became convinced that reading is the most fundamental skill that every child must master in order to become successful. BRI is designed to significantly improve Mississippi students’ pre-literacy and reading skills.

Out-of-School Coffee Hours

We work to build a professional learning community of local out-of-school time providers through monthly coffee hours on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 9:00am to 10:00am. We meet in the lobby of The Graduate Hotel in Oxford.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will be holding May's Out-of-School Time Coffee Hour via Zoom on Wednesday, May 20, 9:00am - 10:00am. A shift to Zoom allows us all to discuss out-of-school time opportunities in the L.O.U. community while staying safe and healthy. We hope to see you there!

Please join us!
